Facebook & Instagram Ads

Facebook and Instagram ads that reach Wollongong customers before they go searching.

Meta campaigns for Illawarra businesses, aimed at the people who will need you soon and do not know you exist yet.

The opportunity

On Facebook, nobody is looking for you. That is exactly why it works.

Search is a queue. People join it only once they have decided they have a problem, and until then your business does not exist to them. Facebook and Instagram sit on the other side of that line. Your future customer is on the couch in Woonona at nine at night, half watching the telly, scrolling. She is not looking for a bathroom renovator. She is three months away from looking for a bathroom renovator.

Show her the right before and after from a job in Balgownie tonight and you are the name she already trusts when the search finally happens. That is what Facebook advertising in Wollongong is for: getting into the consideration set early, cheaply, and often, rather than paying a premium to fight for attention at the very end.

Boosting is not advertising

The blue Boost button is where most local ad budgets quietly disappear.

Almost every Illawarra business we speak to has tried Facebook ads. What they have usually tried is boosting a post: pick a photo you already posted, throw money at a radius, watch the likes arrive, and see no change in the phone. That is not a campaign. It is paying for applause.

What the Boost button cannot do

  • Reach a properly built audience instead of a rough circle on a map
  • Say something different to a stranger than to someone who already visited your website
  • Follow up the people who nearly enquired and got distracted
  • Tell you which ad produced which enquiry
  • Test two ideas against each other so the better one gets the budget
  • Retire an image before your audience is sick of the sight of it

Every one of those is available in Meta's actual ad platform. None of them are on the button.

The build

What a properly run Meta campaign is made of.

Audiences built from your customers, not guesswork.

We start with your own list and your own website visitors, then let Meta find more people like them across the Illawarra. That beats picking interests off a menu every time.

Creative made for a feed, not a brochure.

Vertical, fast, real. Your team, your work, your van, your shopfront. Polished stock imagery is the fastest way to be scrolled past in this region, where people can tell instantly whether you are actually from here.

An offer worth interrupting someone for.

Nobody stops for "quality service since 1998". They stop for a price on a common job, a free measure and quote, a genuine seasonal reason to act now. We work that out with you before anything goes live.

Retargeting the near misses.

Anyone who watched your video, visited a page or messaged you and went quiet gets a second, different message. This is usually the cheapest enquiry in the whole account.

The dataset wired up properly.

Meta pixel and Conversions API installed and tested, with calls and form submissions counted as real events. Without that, Meta optimises towards cheap clicks, because cheap clicks are all you have taught it to find.

New creative on a schedule.

Your audience here is finite, so the same ad gets seen far more often than a search ad ever would. Fresh angles go in before fatigue sets in, not after the results fall over.

Meta or Google

Two different jobs, sold as though they were the same one.

Google Ads catches demand that already exists. Somebody types what they want, you pay to be in front of them, and the ceiling on that is simply how many people search for it each month. Facebook and Instagram ads build demand that has not formed yet, which means everything about running them is different:

  • The creative carries the account. Search ads are words answering a question. A Meta ad has to earn a second of attention first. Accounts here live or die on the images and video, not on clever targeting.
  • You need a reason to act now. A searcher is already motivated. A scroller needs an offer, a deadline or a genuinely good idea, or they will keep scrolling.
  • Measurement is messier, and that is normal. Google hands you the keyword behind a lead. Meta enquiries often turn up days later, by phone, or as someone who "saw you somewhere". You judge Meta on total enquiries and cost per enquiry across a month, not on last click.
  • The timeline is longer at the front. Search ads can produce enquiries in the first fortnight. Meta usually wants a few weeks of learning and a second round of creative before the cost per enquiry settles where it should be.

One more difference, and for some businesses it is the whole reason to be there. Search targeting is stuck with people already near you. Meta is not. A Kiama accommodation operator, an Austinmer cafe or a tour running out of Shellharbour can put themselves in front of Sydney families a fortnight before a long weekend, when nobody has typed a thing yet. Google cannot reach that person, because that person has not had the idea.

Most businesses end up running both. The team behind this service manages Australian small business ad accounts across both platforms every day, so the advice you get on which to start with is based on what actually happens in accounts, not on which one we would rather sell.

Straight answers

Facebook and Instagram ad questions from Wollongong business owners.

The five that come up before anyone commits a budget to paid social.

What does Facebook advertising cost?

There are two separate costs and we keep them separate. Our management is a fixed monthly fee, quoted before anything starts and based on how many campaigns you are running and how much creative work you need. Your ad budget is paid straight to Meta and stays yours. We will tell you what monthly budget your market realistically needs before you commit, and if the number you had in mind is too small to produce a result, we will say so rather than take the fee.

Are Facebook ads worth it for a trade or a small local business?

Often, yes, but not for everything. Emergency work belongs on search, because the customer is already looking. Anything people plan, save for or treat themselves to (renovations, landscaping, cosmetic and dental work, gyms, hospitality, events, tourism) does well on Meta because the decision starts long before the search does. We will tell you which category you are in on the first call.

Do I have to make the videos myself?

No, and we would rather you did not do it alone. We write the copy and build the ads, and we will tell you exactly what to photograph or film, right down to shot lists you can do on a phone. If nothing usable exists, we can arrange the shoot. The most common reason a Meta campaign underperforms in the Illawarra is not targeting, it is a business with only three usable photos.

Am I locked into a contract?

Social campaigns run on a three-month minimum term, and we would rather explain that than bury it. Meta needs a learning period, then a creative round based on what the first one taught us. Judging the account after four weeks means judging it at its worst point. After the initial term it continues month to month.

Do Facebook ads help my Google rankings?

Not directly. Meta traffic is not a ranking factor. What it does do is put more people through your website, which makes weaknesses in that site obvious fast, and it builds the brand searches ("that mob from Corrimal") that make everything else cheaper. If organic rankings are the goal, that is a different job.

More from us

One team for the whole job.

Paid social works hardest when the page after the click and the brand in the ad are handled by the same team.

Next stepFind out whether Meta is right for your business before you spend on it.

Tell us what you sell and who buys it. We will tell you straight whether Facebook and Instagram would work for you, what it would take to do properly, and whether your money is better spent somewhere else first.

No obligation. If paid social is the wrong tool for your business, we will tell you that instead.
