Web design in Shellharbour

Three centres, one name, and customers who use all of them. Getting found here means being clear about which Shellharbour you mean.

The geography

Three Shellharbours, one search market.

Shellharbour is genuinely three places with one name, and it trips up plenty of marketing.

The village and the harbour

The old coastal centre: cafes, pubs, tourism and the businesses that live off summer and long weekends.

Shell Cove and the marina

The newest part, still filling, with waterfront hospitality, new residents and the services that follow new housing.

The city centre

The retail and commercial core, plus professional offices, medical and the businesses serving the broader lake and corridor population.

A customer searching "Shellharbour" could mean any of them, and a business whose website never says which one it is in makes life harder for itself and for Google. Being specific about your location and your service area is not a small SEO detail here. It is the difference between showing up for the right searches and being lost in a name that covers a whole local government area.

Firms and practices

For the firms and practices.

Shellharbour's professional base has grown quickly, and it competes on an uneven field: locally against each other, and regionally against Wollongong firms that have been established for decades and rank accordingly.

The way through is not out-spending them. It is being unmistakably the local option and being easier to deal with. That means the site says clearly where you are and who you serve, it explains what working with you actually involves rather than listing service names, it puts real people on the page, and it lets someone start the process without ringing during business hours.

We have built exactly this kind of site for firms working across Wollongong and Shellharbour, including a full identity and website for a family law practice with offices in both, where the whole brief was explaining difficult services with enough clarity and care that a stressed person feels able to make contact.

Opposite problems

For retail, hospitality and the trades.

Different businesses here have opposite problems.

Hospitality and retail

Around the harbour and the marina they live and die on discovery. Someone deciding where to eat is looking at photos, hours and a map, in that order, on a phone, within the next twenty minutes. Everything else on the site can wait.

Trades and home services

Chasing the new-build and renovation work that follows residential growth, so they need a service area that names the estates and suburbs, jobs photographed properly, and a quote request that works after hours.

Retailers with a physical shop

They need the boring things right: current hours, stock, parking, and whether you actually deliver. Most lost sales in local retail are lost to a missing detail, not a missing website.

SearchGetting found without borrowing Wollongong's rankings.

A lot of Shellharbour businesses target Wollongong terms because that is where the search volume looks biggest, then compete against an entire city for it. Meanwhile the searches with their own suburb in them, the ones with buying intent and far less competition, go to whoever bothered to build a page for them.

We would rather have you first for the searches you can win than page three for the one you cannot. That is the whole approach. SEO

If your branding has not kept up with how the business has grown, that is worth sorting at the same time. Graphic design

Straight answers

Common questions about local web design.

The same five questions come up wherever we are working across the Illawarra, so here they are answered once.

Does my business need its own page for each area it works in?

Not always, and doing it badly is worse than not doing it. It is worth it when you genuinely service several distinct markets and the searches for them are separate, and it is only worth it if each page says something true and specific about that area. A set of near-identical pages with the place name swapped is something Google actively penalises, and we will not build them that way.

Do I need a shopfront to show up in local search?

No. Plenty of businesses across Wollongong and the Illawarra work from a ute, a home office or a yard and rank perfectly well locally. What matters is that your business details are consistent everywhere they appear, your Google Business Profile is set up correctly for a service area rather than an address, and your website is clear about where you actually work.

My customers come from several different areas. Does that change the website?

It changes the structure more than the design. If you travel across the region, the site needs to say so in a way people and search engines can both read, rather than leaving them to guess from your phone number. We work that out with you at the start, because retrofitting it later usually means rebuilding pages.

Do you come to us, or does it all happen over the phone?

Both work. We are based in the region and cover Wollongong and the Illawarra, so meeting in person is easy to arrange when it helps. Plenty of projects run entirely by phone, email and screen share, which suits people who cannot stop work for a meeting. Your call, not ours.

What happens after the website goes live?

The site is submitted to Google properly rather than left to be found, and you get shown how to update the things you will want to change yourself. After that you can look after it or we can, with hosting, backups, security updates and changes as you need them. Either way you own the site, the domain and the accounts.
