Web design in Port Kembla

Around a working port, your website is a credential. It gets read by procurement officers and safety managers long before it gets read by a customer.

The real audience

The people checking you are not the people buying from you.

Port Kembla is not a retail suburb and pretending otherwise in the copy would be silly. The businesses here are built around the port and the heavy industry beside it: contractors, engineering and maintenance services, marine and stevedoring support, transport and logistics, labour and plant hire, environmental and safety specialists, and the trades that keep all of it running.

In that world the website gets opened by people who are not your customer. A procurement officer verifying a new supplier. A safety manager checking whether you look like an organisation with systems. A prime contractor's site administrator confirming you exist before issuing a purchase order. A jobseeker with a ticket you need.

None of them are going to be persuaded by a hero slogan. They are looking for evidence, and either it is there or you are a slightly riskier choice than the supplier whose site had it.

The content

Built for scrutiny, not for browsing.

A site for a business working around the port earns its keep by being complete and specific. Put on it:

  • The exact scope of what you do and where you can work
  • Your ABN and trading history
  • Insurances and certifications with currency dates
  • Licences and tickets held
  • Your safety and environmental approach in plain terms
  • Your equipment and fleet
  • A named contact with a direct line

What can come off: stock photography of an anonymous port that is not this one, vague claims about excellence, and anything that would embarrass you if a client's compliance team read it closely.

There is no downside to being boring and factual here. There is a real downside to looking thin. Website design

Reach

Your market is bigger than the suburb.

Most businesses based here do not only sell here. Work follows the industry up and down the coast and inland, and a good share of enquiries come from companies that have never set foot in the Illawarra.

That means the site should be findable on what you do and what you can work on, not just where you are. Where you are matters, because proximity to the port is genuinely part of your offer, but a site that only talks about location leaves the capability searches on the table entirely. We structure pages around both.

Your domain name is part of that credibility too, and it is worth having it registered in your own name rather than a former developer's. We untangle that more often than you would expect. Domain names

One source of truth

The capability statement and the website should say the same thing.

Most businesses in this sector send a capability statement PDF. Usually it is more accurate and better organised than the website, because it gets updated when a tender demands it and the website does not.

Fix that by treating them as one job. We design the statement and build the site from the same content, so the version a buyer downloads and the version they find on Google agree with each other.

Straight answers

Common questions about local web design.

The same five questions come up wherever we are working across the Illawarra, so here they are answered once.

Does my business need its own page for each area it works in?

Not always, and doing it badly is worse than not doing it. It is worth it when you genuinely service several distinct markets and the searches for them are separate, and it is only worth it if each page says something true and specific about that area. A set of near-identical pages with the place name swapped is something Google actively penalises, and we will not build them that way.

Do I need a shopfront to show up in local search?

No. Plenty of businesses across Wollongong and the Illawarra work from a ute, a home office or a yard and rank perfectly well locally. What matters is that your business details are consistent everywhere they appear, your Google Business Profile is set up correctly for a service area rather than an address, and your website is clear about where you actually work.

My customers come from several different areas. Does that change the website?

It changes the structure more than the design. If you travel across the region, the site needs to say so in a way people and search engines can both read, rather than leaving them to guess from your phone number. We work that out with you at the start, because retrofitting it later usually means rebuilding pages.

Do you come to us, or does it all happen over the phone?

Both work. We are based in the region and cover Wollongong and the Illawarra, so meeting in person is easy to arrange when it helps. Plenty of projects run entirely by phone, email and screen share, which suits people who cannot stop work for a meeting. Your call, not ours.

What happens after the website goes live?

The site is submitted to Google properly rather than left to be found, and you get shown how to update the things you will want to change yourself. After that you can look after it or we can, with hosting, backups, security updates and changes as you need them. Either way you own the site, the domain and the accounts.
