Web design in Thirroul

Half your customers were told about you by a friend. They still looked you up before they came. What they found decided whether they turned up.

How it really works here

Word of mouth ends at a search bar.

Thirroul trades on recommendation more than almost anywhere in the region. A physio, a cafe, a yoga studio, a hairdresser, a small studio practice: the referral comes from a neighbour, a school gate or a local group.

Then the recommended person gets searched. Every time. The customer wants to check the hours, see whether it looks like their sort of place, find out if you take bookings, and confirm you are still open. Ninety seconds on a phone, and a surprising number of warm referrals quietly evaporate right there because there was nothing to find, or what was there was three years old.

A website in a village like this is not a lead generator so much as a closer. Its job is to confirm a decision someone has already half made.

The audience

Two audiences on Lawrence Hargrave Drive.

Thirroul businesses serve two quite different groups and often do not realise it.

Locals

They know you exist. They want practical things: current hours, whether you are open on a public holiday, the booking link, parking, the actual menu rather than a photo of a menu from 2019.

Fast, current, boring information, done well.

Weekenders and visitors

They are coming down the coast road, off the train, or up from Wollongong for the afternoon. They know nothing about you and are choosing between you and four others in the same block.

For them the site gives a feel for the place, shows what it looks like inside, and makes the offer clear enough to commit to.

The same site can serve both, but only if it is designed on purpose. Most templates serve neither. Website design

SpeedBuilt for a phone with one bar and no patience.

Most of the searches that matter to a Thirroul business happen on a phone, outdoors, often on a connection that is doing its best. If your site takes six seconds, a chunk of those people never see it at all. They have already tapped the next result.

We build lean. Images sized properly, no bloated page builders, hosting on fast Australian servers, and pages that render usefully before everything has finished loading. Speed is not a nice-to-have here, it is the difference between an enquiry and a bounce.

Bookings

If you take bookings, that is the whole website.

For a clinic, a studio or a venue, every other page on the site exists to get someone to the booking step. So we design that step first, then build the rest around it: booking visible without scrolling, working on mobile without pinching, no account creation, no dead ends. Whatever system you already use, we work with it rather than making you change.

Straight answers

Common questions about local web design.

The same five questions come up wherever we are working across the Illawarra, so here they are answered once.

Does my business need its own page for each area it works in?

Not always, and doing it badly is worse than not doing it. It is worth it when you genuinely service several distinct markets and the searches for them are separate, and it is only worth it if each page says something true and specific about that area. A set of near-identical pages with the place name swapped is something Google actively penalises, and we will not build them that way.

Do I need a shopfront to show up in local search?

No. Plenty of businesses across Wollongong and the Illawarra work from a ute, a home office or a yard and rank perfectly well locally. What matters is that your business details are consistent everywhere they appear, your Google Business Profile is set up correctly for a service area rather than an address, and your website is clear about where you actually work.

My customers come from several different areas. Does that change the website?

It changes the structure more than the design. If you travel across the region, the site needs to say so in a way people and search engines can both read, rather than leaving them to guess from your phone number. We work that out with you at the start, because retrofitting it later usually means rebuilding pages.

Do you come to us, or does it all happen over the phone?

Both work. We are based in the region and cover Wollongong and the Illawarra, so meeting in person is easy to arrange when it helps. Plenty of projects run entirely by phone, email and screen share, which suits people who cannot stop work for a meeting. Your call, not ours.

What happens after the website goes live?

The site is submitted to Google properly rather than left to be found, and you get shown how to update the things you will want to change yourself. After that you can look after it or we can, with hosting, backups, security updates and changes as you need them. Either way you own the site, the domain and the accounts.

Next stepHave a look at your site the way a visitor does

Open it on your phone, standing outside, and try to book something. If that is awkward, we can fix it. We are local, so a coffee in the village is easy to arrange.

No obligation. We will tell you if a job is not worth doing.
